Apple DisplayPort-Dual Link DVI adapter delayed until December 23. Bah! Humbug!

Thu, 11/20/2008 - 05:35 — Seth Weintraub

I don't know what to say. I am livid.

Not only has Apple charged me $100 to use my 30 inch screen with my Unibody MacBook, but the adapter is huge and takes a USB port for power.  Oh, and there was a one month wait for these parts initially.  Also, the way this technology works, I can't use a regular DVI adapter on a 30 inch monitor.  If I try, I get the same resolution as on my MacBook's built-in display, not normal 1920x1200 resolution that the normal DVI supports.  WTF.

OK, whatever.  I am over it.  It should come any day now right?  Wrong!  In a letter that could have been worded by the Grinch, Apple wrote to tell me and probably many others (below) that my Dual Link DVI Adapter wouldn't be shipping until Dec 23.  That is over two months past when the MacBooks were shipped! Great news, we'll all be on Christmas vacation by then.

Unacceptable Apple.  UNACCEPTABLE!!!

Oh, and fanboys?  Light me up, I can't wait...I have the alert on ready

I can tell you're really upset. Take a deep breath. Now, go back and read what you've posted. I've gotten emails from Nigerian businessmen with better grammar. Wow.

Seth,
Send an E- mail to Steve Jobs or just make a big stink on all of your blogs. Public scrutiny has a way of moving things along. Your not exactly Joe Schmoe Apple User - at least on the interwebs you have some sort of "celebrity" that you can use.

"Now, I don't want to get off on a rant here, but..." - Dennis Miller

Well...

I feel for you, but - why rush out and get the latest and greatest Mac before the cable was shipping? If I had a 30-inch display that I needed to use, I'd wait until it was available before upgrading my Mac.

Come now ... Why rush out and

Come now ... Why rush out and buy the latest Mac? What a poor response. This was a great and needed article. I think the true question should be "Why would Apple release the 'latest mac' without having the DVI adapter ready". The adapter is a necessary item not a frivolous one.

Fanboy, Actually I got it

Fanboy,

Actually I got it because initially Apple said it was going to be shipping in a week.  Then it said a month.  Now it is 2 months.

Fair enough; perhaps you

Fair enough; perhaps you should have mentioned that in the article. But slapping a fanboy label on anyone who doesn't sympathize with your trivial plight is ignorant and immature at best.

99 dollars is nonsense

Anyway charging for an adapter 100 dollars is simply nonsense. I paid 30 dollars for the DVI adapter and this is still too much..

By the way, why don't they make a cable of mini display port - DVI?? Why should I use the cable from the monitor? I don't like a white block next to my laptop. It is really ugly.

weird, seems to be on stock at many shops

had a small research on the internet here in Austria/Europe, seems to be in stock at many places here....maybe the pirates captured a ship from hongkong/shanghai lately....

Nein! Schnell!!

I've exhausted my German... but, fanboy you are wrong.  Deutchbag!

Poor Baby

Oh booo hooooo...cry me a river. That seems like a rather awful first world problem you have there. Do you ever take a step back and think to yourself. I am complaining about my 30inch display and my brand new $2500 laptop....I am a douche

That's not true. I am a huge mac fanboy and being in college I'm constantly living on ramen. Sometimes people just make sacrifices for things that work... Buying a $1299 apple is nothing compared to the three $500 Windows laptops that I would have to get when they inevitably die, crash, or get bugs in that three year period.

Sorry but this whole thing is

Sorry but this whole thing is a complete joke. I agree with previous poster, why can't they make a cable to plug in your monitor, instead of a stupid bulky adapter. Or both. And who the hell do they think they are to charge what they do. They're all about sleek design and being at the top of the market for what their stuff looks like, but then go and force you to have ridiculous adapters next to your £1200 MacBook. Windows users laugh.

Magic cable?

"Why can't they make a cable to plug in your monitor, instead of a stupid bulky adapter?"
Simple googling or wiking usually helps.
DVI-stream just does not convert to DP's micro packets magically in cable. They ate totally different technologies.
If you'd buy a monitor with DP input, then simple cable would be enough, IF miniDP-standardDP cable would exist! Thanks Apple for another new proprietary "bag of hurt" (=miniDP)!

30" Monitor resolution...

Your 30" monitor runs at 1920x1200?

Bummer.

I'd be expecting 2560x1600 from mine.

you misunderstand.  It runs

you misunderstand.  It runs at 2560x1600 like all of the others.  But you'd think it could downsample to 1920x1600

nope 1280x800 is all you can get with a single link.

Sorry,

Your Engrish prose misconfused me.

What do you mean if you use a

What do you mean if you use a "regular DVI adapter" ? Do you mean if you try to use the available minidp to single-link DVI adapter, you only get 1920 x 1200 resolution?

If that's the case, then at least i can use my 30in monitor instead of it sitting here and collecting dust...

If you're on Christmas

If you're on Christmas vacation then it doesn't seem like there should be any problem. I don't have a 30" monitor, but if needing dual-DVI was critical to me then I would have waited until the dongle was ready until I bought a Macbook. It's still not cool of Apple but people knew about the problem right away and if you wanted to avoid the hassle you should have waited.
