Apple quits US Chamber of Commerce in pro-Green protest

Apple is using its clout to force a change of attitude toward environmental matters at the highest levels of the US establishment, today announcing it intends pulling out of the US Chamber of Commerce because of that chamber’s “strident criticism of plans to reduce US greenhouse gas emissions”, reports The Washington Post.  (We've pasted the letter below)

It’s a serious protest at the Chamber’s ineffectiveness at accepting and acting on the dangers of climate change.

In a letter to the Chamber president, Apple VP, Catherine Novelli said: "Apple supports regulating greenhouse gas emissions, and it is frustrating to find the Chamber at odds with us in this effort." As a result, Novelli said, "we have decided to resign our membership effective immediately."

The Chamber has opposed legislation designed to reduce emissions. Apple is the fourth company to withdraw from the group in protest at its attitude to these matters. And Nike recently resigned its seat on the chamber board, but kept its membership.

These moves represent a serious rift between member companies of the Chamber and the association’s actions vis-a-vis climate change.

This is the latest in a series of high-profile moves on Apple’s part. Most recently the company set a new agenda for reporting of environmental consequences of CE production.

Apple updated the environment section of its website to address concerns about the lack of reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants.

Apple said then that it hopes to focus the public attention not only on the cost to the environment of making products but also to put a spotlight on how energy efficient and environmentally friendly products are in the long run.

The new reporting cycle includes: Life Cycle Impact, Product Usage Impact, and Product Environmental Reports. There is also a new section section dedicated to  environmental updates which is both a news feed and a timeline of Apple's history of environmental activity.

Publication of the report won praise from Greenpeace, who said, “Apple can justly pat itself on the back for listening to their customers who asked for greener gadgets.”

Clearly Apple has taken criticism of its environmental activities to heart, and is rapidly moving to help force the agenda forward with its latest move to quit the Chamber in protest at that group’s obfuscation on such matters.

To think, World War Four will not be fought between nations, but between those with a vision and a conscience - and those who are insecure, small minded and greedy.

Let battle commence.

(This lovingly typed on an extra green late 2009 model 15" MacBook Pro.)

Suck it, Greenpeace!

Relax... Lot's of companies are pulling out of the chamber right now. Apple isn't on some high and mighty personal crusade. Big article in the Wall Street Journal on this very topic just today.

too bad nobody can read it online....
$$

Isn't Steve Jobs still driving an AMG? Double standards I guess...

I hope Apple's just using "green" as an excuse to pull out for other reasons; I'm really tired of hearing environmentalist bullshit from Apple, Google, et al., particularly when most of my life runs off of their products. My gut feeling is that Apple is just doing this to suck up to the green-conscience-ridden liberal segment (which is annoying), while Google may actually be sincere about it (which is creepy).

Grow Up!

Climate change is important, and it's not just for liberals, it's a very important issue that effects us all. We will end up paying more in the long run, if we don't sort it out now!

The earth is a big mother place, and it's climate has changed drastically over the years. It's the height of arrogance to think we can hold back it's climate change. We are the ones who will have to adapt or die -- not the earth.

The Chamber of Commerce is one of the few government agencies not falling for the "climate change" (a name that was changed from Global Warming when it was conclusively proven wrong) political bullsnot.

The EPA (and Europe/UK) has extremely flawed thinking when it comes to emissions. CO2 is a product of complete fuel combustion. So in order to reduce CO2, we need to make cars run less efficiently and use more catalytic converters to compensate for the dirtier engines. Kind of counterproductive isn't it?

while all you sheeple morons are bitching about some stupid gas that makes up .03% of the atmosphere rainforrests are being cut down and habitat destroyed. what a bunch of self-righteous losers.

as if Nike gives a sh** - did I hear someone say sweatshops?

Oh an yes, Apple, the good guys that lets suppliers drive their workers into suicide.....

what a wonderful world this could be....

No offense to these companies, but I'd rather the people decide rather than a bunch of jackass executives.
Don't be fooled, whether they leave or stay it's all about the benjamins.
You need to balance the regulation with realism and that's where I have a problem with both sides.

+1 Big Time!

Apple needs to stay out of Politics or they will be boycotted by two thirds the market for one reason or another.

They are making it hard for me to support them, recommend them, and buy their products.

Fact is, in this case, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is probably right. Obama and Gore are wrong and global warming caused by man is a load of crap.

If Apple wants to keep growing, they need to kick some people off their board of directors and get some objective intelligence in there.

You complete and utter nincompoop.

You probably still think the world is flat!?

Any you probably believe whatever people on TV tell you.

I have no idea why the climate is changing. Whether it's man-made or not is moot. But climate has changed drastically in the earth's history. Ice ages, age of dinosaurs, etc. You think you can coax the earth's climate to change by driving a Prius? That's funny!

Eco types are some of the most conservative folks I know. They don't want ANYTHING to change. Beach erosion, temperatures, new species entering new areas. They don't want to allow any of it. What about REMOVING dams. Those hydro dams have created new eco-ssytems. Yet for some reason, we need to restore an old eco system that disappeared almost 100 years ago when the dam was built. I just shake my head.

People pretend they are concerned for the earth. That's funny. You can be concerned for your own life, but apart from nuclear proliferation, there is little we can do to dictate what the earth does. It moves as it moves. Life will go on. It is us who needs to adapt to how the earth changes.

I agree, it is us who needs to adapt.

I grew up hearing that we and the tech we make is better than nature. Later I heard that we can learn from nature. Now I am hearing it is better to work with nature and let the Earth do it's own thing and we need to get out of the way.

Apple is trying to do that and I think it makes sense. Adapt to work with and not against nature.

I'm gonna guess that you got your info from tv also, just a different station. Either that or you have no idea what your talking about entirely independent of the political pundits. Quit believing what everyone else tells you about the science and do a little digging on your own.

"Obama and Gore are wrong..."

Yes, well, those of us outside the U.S. think it's rather arrogant of you folks to think that all of Europe has been persuaded, not by science, but by your politicians. Truth is, we don't care what Obama and Gore do/have done. We've been aware of the science for a lot longer than either of them have been on the stage.

Like someone said upthread: Lots of companies are doing this lately, Exelon (the nation's largest Nuclear power supplier) and Nike to name two big ones.

The Chamber of Commerce lobbies on behalf of its members. Apple doesn't like how they are lobbying and fighting any movement on climate change. Apple leaves. If they don't want this representation, then they can quit. And they did.

This clinches it, Apple is officially gay.

And you sir, you are an imbecile.

Wow people! I really like this site and normally I am enjoying to read through the comments, just for a little laugh, but what has been posted further up has - at first - made me laugh out loud and then shake my head in disbelieve.
Seriously guys, one or two people suggesting climate change and human influence is a joke I would have been ok with, nobody would expect 100% of the visitors here to have a brain and to use it, but the number and the content of the arguments given up there are simply unbelievable.
Please everyone that thinks humans have only little impact on climate change - especially while accusing "the other side" of blind believes - take 30 min of your time (It cannot be that expensive) and look at the scientific comments to this issue.
I have recently done some research on the topic and I have not found ONE single scientist, who just as much as doubts the connection made between the human caused emissions and a change in the climate that is so radical that we as humans will not be able to simply adapt if we go on like this.

And by the way, of course it is not right to cut down the rain forest, but this is an argument for additional projects and initiatives, NOT against the movements for emission reductions.

Sorry to write so much here on rather off topic note, but some people are just way too stupid and ignorant to let them speak without putting things into perspective.

Hear Hear - I have found the crass stupidity displayed by a thin minority of readers here on this matter to be quite depressing. I mean, those readers aren't just letting 9to5 Mac down, they aren't just letting you down, or me down, but they are letting themselves down, and completely letting down the planet and the future generations who will have to survive climate change armageddon.

It's completely irresponsible thinking.

The ideal the President puts forth, is utopianism. And this is achieved via a gracious and righteous government.

Of course, in human history, this has always led to totalitarianism, communism or dictatorships.

The false idea that Government is good, and that Corporations are evil, are trying to be turned on their heads here.

Think of it this way: Everyone is made of timber - that's good. But we are all made of crooked timber - that's bad.

Everyone has their own motives, and to pretend politicians or enviro groups, or companies (pick your good guy) have good people only wanting the best (because they are on your side) is naive - at best.

Understand everyone has their own motives, power, money, a false idea we can build utopia on the earth if everyone sang John Lenon songs, and the list goes on.

Everyone this go-around is playing everyone. Pretty sad to watch people pick sides or play along as if Apple or the Commerce, or some other group is the good guy, and others are the bad guy.

And to think - all about an idea of global warming that will flip on it's head in a few years time to global cooling again (yeah, it's been cooling for over 5 straight years now. Hello?...). Anyone remember the coming ice age of the 70's??? Anything to play on the sheeple for political control and power - or sales - or... or... or...

Sadly, your analysis of global cooling is a side effect of global warming. It's just the corps in the commerce haven't wanted to explain it to you properly in the USA, and under your dear twice in power and seen as only once legally elected ex-fuhrer, George Bush, big biz was under no pressure to react to the environmental warnings.

In other words you think you haven't been played, when you so have been
