Apple is 'growing number of embedded devices' in 2009

Merry Christmas to those who asked Santa for more Apple tablet type products in 2009.  These aren't our words...they are Apple's:

The Mac OS X software team is looking for an exceptionally talented software engineering manager to lead Apple's Core OS Network Authentication and Security team. This team is responsible for the development and support of key networking infrastructure for Mac OS X. Specific areas of responsibility include VPN, 802.1X, and related Internet protocols, network security protocols and applications, and network configuration management. The software developed by the networking team runs on a broad spectrum of platforms, including Macs and Windows, and from servers down to a growing number of embedded devices including iPhone.

It frankly doesn't get any more clear than that. (originally from September)

As much as I love Apple's simple and minimalistic line of products, I also get a buzz from seeing cool new designs and incredible new products that nudge me to sell my belongings in order to purchase them. I enjoy the mockups but nothing excites me as much as seeing a new Apple design (especially during a Keynote at an event like Macworld... hint, hint, Steve...)

While this most likely means iPad, it could also mean anything from eMate type of netbook to new Time Capsule/AppleTV/Airports, etc.

That being said, this post is screaming iPad.

The iPad would be the biggest and very logical move for Apple. The wait is hopefully finally OVER!

How do you read "tablet" from this announcement?

("Still a man hears what he wants to hear/And disregards the rest." Paul Simon, The Boxer, 1968)

i agree. How can you assume they mean a tablet pc?

I agree with Luis. If they just sell more iPhones, their statement is truthful. (I believe Paul Simon's song is quoting what's known as the PT Barnum effect, by the way, It which was created to explain why people believe palmists & Tarot card readers, and why the tablet rumor can never die)

Maybe I'm struck with the Christmas blues but I really don't see why everyone bangs on and on and ON about wanting an Apple tablet. Much as the iPhone is absolutely fantastic, it sure has shown up the limitations of a touch-screen only interface. I simply cannot for the life of me fathom what could effectively be done with a tablet that can't already be done on an iPhone. Mac computing as it exists in even it's most basic form on a MacBook simply couldn't work on a tablet.

A more expanded, bigger iPhone type tablet would be evolutionary and very logical in too many ways to kepp describing to people with little imagination. So stop being a scrooge every time a tablet is raised and just don't buy one. Move on. Do you buy every device Apple sells?

For designers like myself, who sketch for a living, we love tablets. Something like this might even hit a larger pro market than consumer. And there are plenty of people like myself who would rather have an Apple product with it's fantastic OS than a junky PC. For at home why have a wacom, keyboard, mouse, monitor and possibly a laptop crowding your desktop when you could just clean it up with an iPad? and for computing and sketching on the go? I'm definitely in for one of these.

Ya know what......I think I like the term "iPad". It just fits the apple style of product naming.
Its better than "mactouch" imo.

But does this job listing mean they will debut such a product in 2009? I mean there were similar job listings in the beginning of the year with no related products to show for it. Is this any different?
They may hire someone tomorrow for a product launch in 2010 (vomits). It makes me sick to talk sense like this. :(

But I want to be wrong and I want to see the iPad announcement at macworld. And I don't care if it will be Phil Schiller announcing it.

Oh, and one more thing apple. Make sure to WOW and surprise the industry by making the product be the first commercial product to use a FLEXIBLE DISPLAY!

Merry Christmas! :)

the first macbook that can actually flop

The first computer that's completely useless. Why on earth do you want a flexible display?!

To solve the problem of having a computing device with a large screen still be able to fit in your pocket....OF COURSE!

Didn't you watch that D: all things digital conference? The one where Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were questioned about this? Steve Jobs response was a cold stare with a sneaky knowitall grin. :)

But how could you possible use a device with a flexible screen?

It doesn't have to be so flexible that it can't support its own weight like tissue paper. It could be just flexible enough so you can adjust the size of the display like your rolling out a tape measure. When you have it at the size u want simply start using it.
In this case most likely touching it as well cause it would surely have multi-touch.

So you have a screen that can get bigger and smaller? Where does all this extra mass come from?

Could also mean they may try and move OS X onto their Airport products - Given the job posting relates to networking experience.

Aren't the whole range of iPods embedded devices? This ad says nothing about future products. Do you think the human resources department would know about this anyway? Duh.

not sure normal iPods would need the VPN and networking capabilities that the job description states.

My ultimate netbook would be charged via USB, so I don't need to carry a wall wart of any kind and can charge virtually anywhere. It would be very thin (like nearly iPhone thin). It would have a physical keyboard, because it is a secondary computer, not an iPod/iPhone. It would sync with my main computer via an iTunes type of experience. It would get wicked battery life. It would be an 8" diagonal widescreen. I think that's a sweet spot for size/readability. A 10" is nice, but gets too large IMHO. It can truly be a secondary computer. Most netbooks meet that role, allowing many/most common applications.

If Apple can do that (preferably with an ARM) then I would be sold and my HP Mini would go on eBay.

The last thing I want in a tablet is a keyboard, sliding or otherwise.
Give me a good interface (touch, voice, gesture, accel. etc) and the ability to dock to a keyboard at home if I want, or I can choose to throw a collapsible docking keyboard. But don't make me carry around a keyboard in any form built-in. If I wanted that, I'd just get an Air.

I hope that any mac tablet is not just like a bigger iPhone. I want something that's as durable as a big hunk of plastic. I want to be able to cut a steak on the thing. I don't want some metal-edged, glass-faced tablet. I want something that can be knocked around a bit without worrying about it. Thin and super durable - That's what's needed in a tablet. It's probably too early to have a flexible OLED display on it, but that would be nice.

Something this size would be perfect (I wouldn't even mind the handle):

"The software developed by the networking team runs on a broad spectrum of platforms, including Macs and Windows, and from servers down to a growing number of embedded devices including iPhone."

This doesn't say Apple is growing Embedded Devices, just that the number of Embedded Device ON THE MARKET is growing.

I think it's more like Apple is developing for WinMo too :P

i see nothing about a tablet here. the part you've highlighted might simply refer to the rumored iphone nano, in addition to the iphone, 3g iphone, and the ipod touch. thanks for winding up the tablet nuts, though. i always LOVE hearing from them.

why would you call people who see a use for a different form factor than you 'nuts'?
BTW, your precious keyboard will be a buggy-whip within a few years. Look away from your rear-view mirror.

Pop Sci has a page dedicated to three new digital books that could serve as examples of what is possible. The papeback sized unit would be just right as Newton 2. Of course these are E-Ink machines and I think most of us would prefer good old color.

With the latest OLED panels the Apple device could become extreme versatile. By that I mean filling the rolls of an E-Book reader, a iPod, a video iPod, a PDA ( same programs as the iPhone), E-Mail device, Net Appliance, video phone and whatever else can be imagined.

Some one commented about durability and I'd have to agree that addressing that is important. There are limits of course to just how durable anything can be, so Apple needs to address serviceability in the field. That at the very least means a field replaceable screen & battery.

In any event I'm shocked that people here are shocked that Apple is highering Engineers. Apple has been forthright in saying the are going to invest heavily in R&D to have new products ready for the so called economic recovery. That and people seem to underestimate just how much potential there is for handheld devices with the technology coming out of the labs. If Apple doesn't get going somebody else will eventually establish themselves as the new innovator.

Considering the number of books that Apple has moved for the IPhone, via app store, a larger Touch device ought to arrive with an iBook book store. Id actually like to see Apple start a publishing division to distrupt the old paper tech publishers. Apple could then wipe out Borders and a number of other chain book stores. That would be a very good development.

Dave

I don't read this as being a Tablet either. Here is an article discussing the Newton and an Apple tablet:
