Apple Watch outsold the entire Swiss watch industry in 2019, Strategy Analytics says

Apple’s wearables business continues to grow, and new data today from Strategy Analytics underscores the impact of Apple Watch. While Apple doesn’t report unit sales for Apple Watch, Strategy Analytics estimates that Apple shipped 31 million units worldwide during 2019.

The comparison emphasized by this report is against the Swiss watch industry, which sold 21 million units in 2019. That number includes sales by “all Swiss watch brands combined,” Strategy Analytics says. In addition to outperforming the Swiss watch industry, Apple Watch also grew year-over-year by 36%, with unit sales increasing from 22.5 million to 30.7 million.

Conversely, the Swiss watch industry saw a 13% decline year-over-year, going from 24.2 million in sales to 21.1 million. Steven Waltzer, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, emphasized that Apple Watch is particularly appealing to younger consumers as Swiss watch brands lag:

Traditional Swiss watch makers, like Swatch and Tissot, are losing the smartwatch wars. Apple Watch is delivering a better product through deeper retail channels and appealing to younger consumers who increasingly want digital wristwear. The window for Swiss watch brands to make an impact in smartwatches is closing. Time may be running out for Swatch, Tissot, TAG Heuer, and others.

Apple itself does not report unit sales for Apple Watch or any of its products, so these numbers from Strategy Analytics should be treated with some skepticism. Nonetheless, it’s clear that the Apple Watch continues to grow and eat into the sales of traditional watchmakers.

In its Q1 2020 earnings release, Apple reported revenue of $10 billion from its Wearables, Home, and Accessories category. This quarter marked the first time that Apple’s Wearables business outsold the Mac, which brought in $7.2 billion in revenue for comparison’s sake.
