Although the release of the next iPhone is still months away, we’ve started to hear early rumors about what the iPhone 12 could look like. If we’re going on past trends, Apple will release a 12, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max.

iPhone 12 release date

There have been rumors that Apple will release as many as four new phones in 2020, but we do expect the flagship ones to ship in September of 2020. They will come preloaded with iOS 14.

iPhone 12 design rumors

If you find yourself missings for the days of the iPhone 4, you might be the year for you. Early rumors indicate the return to slab-sided design, with reports suggesting that the device will heavily resemble the iPhone 4. Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said this will come as part of a significant chassis redesign for the iPhone 12.

Kuo believes that the iPhone 12 will still feature curved glass edges around the display, like the iPhone 11. The analyst has referenced 2/2.5D glass in his various reporting on the 2020 iPhone lineup. Currently, the iPhone 11 Pro features a blended design between the glass of the display and the stainless steel edges. This differs from the iPhone 4, which was completely squared-off around the sides.

iPhone 12 pricing

We expect Apple to follow similar pricing for the iPhone 12, Pro, and Pro Max models that they did with the iPhone 11, Pro, and Pro Max Models. It will start at $699 for the regular model while the Pro and Pro max models will be $999 and $1099. As you add storage, the pricing will also increase.

iPhone 12 features

It’s rumored that the flag iPhone in 2020 will be the first iPhone to feature 5G connectivity. 5G will release LTE service for mobile data. We expect 5G connectivity to drive many new iPhone purchases in 2020. It’s also rumored that the 5G iPhone models will support both mmWave and sub-6GHz bands.

We should see an LCP antenna design, which first made its way to the iPhone X in 2017, but hasn’t fully rolled out to every iPhone model. Liquid Crystal Polymer, or LCP, is a desirable material for antenna technology as it performs consistently across different temperatures and has very low loss, which makes it good for 5G technology.

It’s also expected that the next iPhone will have a custom A14 chip from Apple.

After settling its legal fight with Qualcomm last year and securing a 5G chip supply for its 2020 iPhones, things seemed to be looking up for Apple bringing the next-gen cellular standard to its iPhone 12 lineup. However, a new report today says that Apple isn’t satisfied with Qualcomm’s antenna designed to work with its 5G chips and that it may make its own… for this fall’s iPhones.

In a pair of Digitimes reports, the supply chain publication notes that the impacts of the coronavirus will cause disruption to the standard next-gen iPhone manufacturing schedule, but it is unlikely to mean Apple will need to delay the usual September launch timeframe for the iPhone 12 series.

Demand for the A14 chip is also said to be high, with orders more than 50% higher than the equivalent period for the A13 chips. Digitimes notes that this is a result of Apple’s aggressive moves into rolling out 5G on its phones.

Following up on a report from Macotakara before Christmas, the site has now got their hands on mockups of the expected iPhone 2020 range.

It’s still not clear how faithful these mockups are meant to be, but they at least offer a decent side-by-side physical comparison of the new iPhone screen sizes. It is highly possible they are essentially fan-made, rather than being based off leaked CAD schematics or anything more ‘official’.
