After months of rumors and leaks, Apple today officially took the wraps off of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. While Apple showed off a good portion of what’s new on stage during various demos, there are always a few things left over that potential customers would like a first-hand look at. Members of the press who were in the audience during Apple’s event at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium had an opportunity to go hands-on with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, as well as the truly wireless AirPods and the Apple Watch Series 2…
The Verge went hands-on with with all of Apple’s new products today. Nilay Patel described the iPhone 7’s new Taptic Home button as feeling like the entire bottom of the device was moving when pressed, not just the Home “button.” While Patel described this as “neat and cool,” many users might find this to be an annoyance, at least at first. Overall, Patel described the design as being “a lot” like the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s, which is to be expected, though he did praise the device for having a “much nicer” display.
With the iPhone 7, Apple of course removed the headphone jack and introduced new wireless AirPods. Patel described the AirPods as sounding nearly the same as the wired EarPods, with the only difference being that the AirPods are wireless and auto-start and stop music when put in your ear and removed.
Finally, The Verge also went hands-on with the Apple Watch Series 2 and noted of the design, which is slightly thicker than the first-gen model.
Likewise, TechRader had a chance to use the iPhone 7 following its unveil. They noted of the improved sound quality thanks to the dual-speaker set up. CNET noted of the camera differences between the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, as well as the battery improvements and water resistance. CNET also took a look at the new black color option and demoed the zoom functionalities of the camera.
Regarding the auto-connectivity of the AirPods, the hands-on videos that have emerged thus far show the process as being just as simple as Apple made it seem on stage. Once the AirPods are detected by the iPhone, a prompt appears on the iPhone with the option to connect nearly instantly.
Tom’s Guide also went hands-on with the new black iPhone 7 Plus, the accompanying AirPods, and the Apple Watch 2. They pointed out the touch controls of the AirPods, including tap to pause and double tapping to activate Siri. Tom’s Guide also took a look at the bokah effect of the camera and the difference it makes with depth of field, as well as the graphics improvements. Tom’s Guide also went hands-on with the new Apple Watch Series 2 and its improved water resistance, watchOS 3, and the new View Ranger app that takes advantage of the device’s new GPS.
iMore also took a look at the Taptic Engine Home button, the rear camera performance, the True Tone flash, and the improved front-facing shooter. Regarding the AirPods, iMore demonstrated the infrared functionality for accurate in-ear and out of ear detection.
