Apple’s latest charity auction invites you to tour its headquarters in Cupertino

Apple HQ

[Update: The auction closed on 6/18 at $30,500.]

Apple has been a part of several fundraising auctions through Charitybuzz over the last few years, giving lunch meetings and event invites in exchange for generous donations to various non-profit efforts. The company’s latest campaign promises a bit of a golden ticket in Willy Wonka fashion as the highest bidder will be invited to tour Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino and bring 1 guest (or up to 3 kids if it’s a family visit). Just don’t expect to be allowed inside Jony Ive’s secret lab…

Apple’s latest Campus 2 aerial shot shows progress on surrounding buildings & campus

Apple-campus-2-may-12

While the general look of Apple’s Campus 2 construction project is largely the same as recent updates, the latest official aerial shot shared by Apple and the city of Cupertino illustrates progress in a few specific areas.

Aside from the general progress on the main building, the new imagery shows changes in the area seen in the lower right quarter of the shot with yellow material appearing in the dug out section and ground development in the bottom right area of the site.

Beautiful aerial photography shows Apple’s latest Campus 2 construction progress

Campus-2-Michael-Light-01

These might be the best photos yet of Apple’s currently under construction Campus 2 site in Cupertino.

The new photos were published by The California Sunday Magazine and shot by Michael Light, a San Franciso-based photographer and pilot that managed to get some gorgeous photos of the site from his aircraft and outdo the drone shots we’ve see up until now.

We’ve previously shared a number of aerial shots straight from Apple and drone operators flying over the site regularly. All of the latest images, news updates, and drone flyovers for Campus 2 can be found in our ongoing timeline tracking progress at the site.

The most recent updates came last month when Apple shared official aerial shots of Campus 2 and city officials approved a recycled water project that is being partly funded and led by Apple and its new campus.

Apple’s Canadian HQ used to be located in a 78,000 square foot building on the outskirts of Toronto, but the company has recently moved into a smaller downtown location as it looks for a tenant to take over its previous headquarters for the country, according to sources close to the situation.

Architects hate Apple’s spaceship design, but Pixar president says they don’t understand

Site default logo image

maxresdefault

Fortune’s Philip Elmer-DeWitt says that even at an international conference of 6,000 architects, he couldn’t find a single one who liked the spaceship design of Apple’s new campus building. Though if the single quote given is representative of the quality of the critiques, this may not be saying much.

“Does it have to be a spaceship?” asked an official at the American Institute of Architects.

Pixar president Ed Catmull wrote in his book Creativity Inc that they are failing to understand a key feature of the building, derived from a lesson Steve Jobs learned when leading the design of Pixar’s headquarters …

Illustrating everything from cafes to car-parks, the renders are intended to provide a feel for what the building will be like to work in, rather than just its appearance as a structure. They also include additional renders of the upper level of the 1,000-seat auditorium.

Apple’s Cupertino ‘spaceship’ campus given go-ahead (final rubber-stamp vote in Nov)

Site default logo image

campus2

Cupertino City Council last night voted unanimously to approve Apple’s planning application for the circular campus building first presented to council members by Steve Jobs in 2011, in what was to turn out to be his last public appearance before his death. It was Steve Jobs who nicknamed the building the ‘spaceship.’

Although the approval is still subject to a final vote on 15th November, the San Jose Mercury News reports that this is merely a formality.

Now that the project has been approved, the council by regulation must meet one more time on Nov. 15 for a final and largely perfunctory vote. The spaceship, for all practical purposes, has now been approved for liftoff.

Site default logo image

macgpic_1378753658_watermarked

Ahead of tomorrow’s iPhone-relate media event on Apple’s Campus, banners promoting the proceedings have gone up at Apple’s 4 Infinite Loop Town Hall. The banners are nearly identical in design to the event’s official invitation, and some have interpreted the colors to indicate that the iPhone 5C (in multiple colors) will be announced at the event.

Also expected tomorrow is an iPhone 5S, an upgraded version of the iPhone 5 that includes a faster processor, improved camera system, and fingerprint sensor for login authentication. We’ll be covering the event live on 9to5Mac.com, and the event begins at 10 AM Pacific/1 PM Eastern. Another photo below (Thanks, iGen.fr):

Apple is again sending around updated brochures to Cupertino residents on upcoming Campus 2 project

Site default logo image

Last May, after some residents voiced concern about Apple’s planned Spaceship Campus 2 project, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer sent out a brochure/mailer to local residents, hoping to alleviate concerns about the huge new office building and surrounding Campus 2.

Apple last week updated its Campus 2 plans with the inclusion of walk and bike trails and other specifics on the land use. As Macrumors notes, Cupertino residents have begun receiving updated mailers with the new updated information and focused on the positive environmental impact the buildings will have.

At Apple, the environment is a top priority, and we’ve designed Apple Campus 2 with cutting-edge features to make it energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable. Several of these green technologies are highlighted in this update.

As at our existing campus on Infinite Loop, we are committed to 100% renewable energy to power Apple Campus 2. This will include onsite generation from photovoltaics and fuel cells. As part of this effort, approximately 8 megawatts of photovoltaics will be installed, creating one the largest installations of its kind on a corporate campus anywhere in the world.

Apple started in Cupertino, and we are excited to continue to grow here. As we build the new campus, we also plan to invest in new roadways and intersection improvements, add new sidewalks and better bike lanes, and plant new trees in newly created medians in the surrounding neighborhood.

$50,000 buys you a cup of coffee…with Tim Cook at Apple HQ

Site default logo image

Tim-Cook-Charity-Buzz-auction

Apple CEO Tim Cook appears to be offering up his services to charity auction site Charitybuzz in hopes of raising an estimated $50,000 to support the The RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights. By services we mean the winning bidder will get the opportunity to have coffee with Apple’s top exec at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California.

The auction listing notes that it was “Donated by: Tim Cook” and after opening earlier this morning currently has two bids of just over $5,000.

The estimated value for the auction is set at $50,000, and the winning bid will get two lucky individuals the chance to sit down with the CEO for 30min to 1 hour. However, bids don’t include travel or accommodations and Cook’s guests will also be “subject to security screening” before hand to weed out the crazies. (via @Ihnatko)

If you can’t afford Tim Cook, former U.S. President Bill Clinton is available for less than half the price (via).
